DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is the primary self-tanning agent in all sunless tanning products. Derived from plant-based sugars, it reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of your skin to produce a natural-looking tan. This process, known as the Maillard reaction, develops color within 4-8 hours and typically lasts 5-7 days, depending on your skin's natural exfoliation cycle and aftercare. DHA is the cornerstone of sunless tanning, delivering safe, effective, and UV-free results.

Erythrulose is another sugar-derived tanning agent often used in combination with DHA. It develops color more gradually over 24-48 hours and helps create a deeper, more even tan with a smoother fade. However, erythrulose is not used in all products due to its slower development time and its limitations as a standalone tanning ingredient. While it can produce a light tan on its own, it is far more effective when paired with DHA, as this combination enhances the overall depth, longevity, and appearance of the tan.

At AYU Sunless, we use the best of both ingredients to create innovative, skin care-infused tanning solutions that honor your skin's natural radiance while delivering a beautiful, long-lasting tan.
