The Meaning Behind AYU

The name AYU is inspired by Ayurveda, the ancient Indian philosophy centered on balance in mind, body, and environment.

Ayurveda translates to “the science of life.”

This philosophy influenced the early life of AYU Sunless founder Vibha Makwana, who was born into an Indian family living in Tanzania. Her upbringing emphasized natural foods, herbs, breathing practices, and a thoughtful approach to wellness.

Those early experiences shaped her perspective on health and ingredients long before she entered the world of cosmetic formulation.

Today, the concept of balance continues to inspire the philosophy behind AYU Sunless.

Meet the Founder

Vibha Makwana Cosmetic Chemist | Founder of AYU Sunless

Vibha Makwana holds a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry and has over 30 years of experience in cosmetic formulation and manufacturing.

Her career began in cosmetic laboratories where she gained hands-on experience developing personal care formulations and learning every stage of production—from raw materials to finished products.

In the early 2000s, Vibha saw an opportunity to deepen understanding of formulation science in the sunless tanning industry. Rather than focusing only on color, she recognized the importance of understanding how the skin itself influences tanning results.

In 2003, she founded AYU Sunless to approach sunless tanning from a cosmetic chemist’s perspective

Today, Vibha continues to lead formulation development at AYU Sunless, working alongside an in-house cosmetic chemistry team to research, formulate, and produce sunless tanning solutions trusted by professionals worldwide.

Sunless tanning works through a reaction between dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and the amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum.

Because this reaction occurs on the skin’s surface, factors such as hydration, preparation, and formulation compatibility influence how evenly the tan develops.

Our formulations combine carefully selected botanical ingredients with well-researched cosmetic actives that support skin comfort while creating a natural-looking sunless tan. Ingredients such as red rooibos tea from South Africa, white tea from China, shea butter from West Africa, jojoba oil from Mexico, and muscadine grapes grown throughout the southern United States are chosen for their skin-conditioning and antioxidant properties.

In the United States, cosmetic ingredients must be listed in descending order of predominance. This means the ingredient listed first appears in the highest concentration, while those further down the list are present in smaller amounts.
