AYU Sunless was built on everything we have learned across organic chemistry, skincare formulation, hair care formulation, color cosmetics, cosmetic compounding, ingredient sourcing, and manufacturing, combined with a lifetime shaped by Ayurvedic principles of skin health and balance.
What has driven every AYU formula from the beginning is that beautiful sunless color begins with respect for the skin. The formula matters. The ingredients matter. And the care taken before and after the tan matters, too.

But AYU has never been about the product in the bottle alone.

It is about the professional standing behind the spray gun, the client trusting that professional with their skin, and the confidence that comes when both feel supported. Our goal is to help artists feel educated, prepared, and proud of the results they create, while helping clients feel cared for in their skin.
That is why AYU Sunless was founded in 2003: to create sunless tanning products that support healthy-looking skin, deliver beautiful, natural-looking color, and give professionals the knowledge and confidence to use them well.
Today, that philosophy guides every AYU product, from professional spray tan solutions and self-tanners to pre-tan prep, post-tan care, and body care formulated to support healthy skin before, during, and after the tan.
Every tan tells you something about the skin it developed on. We built AYU to help professionals understand both.

Meet the Founder

Vibha Makwana — Cosmetic Chemist · Founder · Formulator
I grew up in an Indian family living in Tanzania, with a childhood shaped by different cultures, traditions, and ways of understanding health. Long before I ever worked in a laboratory, I understood that what we put on the body matters. Food, herbs, daily rituals, and the way we care for the skin all carry wisdom passed down through generations.
My mother did not call it science. But in many ways, that is exactly what it was.

I went on to earn a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry and spent decades working inside cosmetic laboratories, learning formulation from the ground up, from ingredient sourcing and raw material selection to compounding, manufacturing, and finished product performance. My experience included skincare, hair care, and color cosmetics, and when I moved into sunless tanning, I brought all that knowledge with me.
What I found was an industry still heavily influenced by traditional tanning culture, where UV tanning beds and sun exposure were seen as the norm for achieving color. Sunless tanning was just beginning to grow, but many formulas were quick-turnaround products: DHA, alcohol, bronzer, and hope for the best.

To me, that was not good enough for the skin, nor for the professionals trying to deliver beautiful results.
I believed sunless tanning could be formulated differently, with more thought, more ingredient knowledge, and more respect for the skin. That belief became the foundation of AYU Sunless.
AYU was created for professionals and clients who want more than temporary color. It was created for those who care about how the skin feels, how the tan develops, how it fades, and how confident a client feels walking out after their service.

Today, I work alongside Dharmen Makwana, a cosmetic R&D specialist with 29 years of experience and patents in amino acid and protein technologies used in skincare, and Milan Makwana, who is completing a Master's degree in Cosmetic Chemistry.
Together, we are not simply choosing products from a catalog. We are a formulation team. Every AYU product begins with ingredient knowledge, skin science, and a deep respect for the person who will use it.

The Meaning Behind AYU

AYU is inspired by Ayurveda, the ancient Indian philosophy often described as "the science of life."
To me, Ayurveda has always been about balance. Not balance as a trend or aesthetic, but balance as a way of understanding the body, the skin, and daily care.

Ayurveda shaped the way I thought about ingredients long before I had a chemistry degree. The idea that what we apply to the skin should work with its natural systems, not against them, became more than a personal belief. It became a formulation standard.

That philosophy lives in every AYU product.
I choose ingredients for what they do for the skin, not just how they sound on a label. I formulate with respect for the skin barrier, the tanning reaction, and the way skin feels before, during, and after the tan. The goal is not only beautiful color, but skin that feels cared for, supported, and healthy-looking.

The Science Behind the Spray

Sunless tanning works through the Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction between dihydroxyacetone, known as DHA, and the free amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin, called the stratum corneum. This reaction produces temporary brown-toned pigments called melanoidins, which create the appearance of a tan.
But this reaction does not happen in a perfect laboratory setting. It happens on real skin.
Every client's skin is different. Hydration, barrier condition, skin texture, pH, exfoliation habits, and the natural thickness of the stratum corneum all influence how evenly a tan develops, how natural it looks, and how gracefully it fades.
That understanding is one of the foundations of AYU Sunless.

Every AYU product begins at the formulation bench in our Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility.
We do not use private-label formulas. We do not outsource production. Every formula is developed in-house, evaluated through multiple revisions, and produced in small batches by the same team that designed it.
This matters because formulation integrity is not something that can be checked only at the end. It lives in the decisions made at every stage: which ingredients we source, how we evaluate compatibility, how the formula feels on skin, how the tan develops, and how it fades over time.
Those decisions require a team that understands the formula from the first ingredient choice to the final product in the bottle.

Every ingredient in our formulas is chosen with intention, from cosmetic actives that support skin feel and formula performance to botanicals selected for their documented skin-conditioning and antioxidant properties. You will find ingredients such as red rooibos tea, white tea, jojoba, muscadine grape extract, and botanical butters throughout our product line.
Cosmetic ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration until they reach 1 percent. After that, ingredients may be listed in any order. Understanding this helps professionals and clients read labels more accurately and make genuinely informed choices.
