How to Care for Your Skin Between Spray Tan Appointments
A spray tan appointment may take only a few minutes, but the condition of the skin between appointments influences how the next tan develops, wears and fades.
DHA creates color within the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of non-living skin cells. That color gradually fades as those cells naturally shed. Aftercare cannot stop normal skin renewal, but it can help prevent unnecessary dryness, friction and uneven surface buildup.
The goal is not to preserve every trace of color indefinitely. It is to keep the skin comfortable and balanced so the current tan fades more evenly and the skin is ready for the next appointment.
This guide begins with the first rinse after a spray tan, continues through daily aftercare and fading, and ends with preparing the skin for the next appointment.
Follow the Correct First-Rinse Instructions
The first rinse is different from an ordinary shower. Follow the timing provided for the specific spray tan solution.
During the first rinse:
-
Use lukewarm water
-
Allow the cosmetic bronzer to rinse away
-
Do not scrub or exfoliate
-
Avoid very hot water
-
Gently pat the skin dry
The skin may look lighter after the bronzer rinses away. This does not mean the spray tan disappeared. The DHA-developed color may continue becoming more visible over the following hours.
Clients with dry or mature skin may apply a light, well-formulated moisturizer after the first rinse once the skin has been gently dried. Follow any formula-specific instructions provided by the spray tan artist.
Cleanse Without Repeatedly Stripping the Skin
Once regular showering resumes, use a gentle, pH-balanced body cleanser. A cleanser should remove perspiration, sunscreen, environmental debris and everyday residue without leaving the skin feeling tight or excessively dry.
Use lukewarm rather than very hot water. Long, hot showers can leave the skin feeling drier and may contribute to faster, less even fading.
Apply body wash gently with your hands. Aggressive washcloths, loofahs and exfoliating mitts create additional friction and are unnecessary for daily cleansing.
AYU offers several body washes formulated for regular body care and sunless-tan maintenance.
Moisturize Consistently
Do not wait until the day before the next appointment to begin moisturizing.
Apply a well-formulated moisturizer daily, especially to the lower legs, knees, elbows, hands and other areas that tend to become dry. After showering, gently pat the skin and apply moisturizer while the surface still retains a little water.
A lotion may be appropriate for everyday use, while a richer body butter can provide additional comfort for skin that needs more emollient support.

A body butter can be useful between appointments, but heavy product residue should not remain on the skin immediately before a spray tan. Follow the artist’s preparation instructions as the next appointment approaches.
Understand What Makes a Spray Tan Fade Faster
A developed tan does not wash away in one ordinary shower. However, repeated water exposure, heat, friction and surface-cell removal can accelerate fading.
Common contributors include:
-
Long, hot showers or baths
-
Frequent swimming
-
Shaving
-
Tight clothing that repeatedly rubs the skin
-
Aggressive towel drying
-
Scrubs, exfoliating mitts or exfoliating acids
-
Repeated friction from workouts or daily activities
You do not need to avoid normal life to maintain a spray tan. Simply understand that swimming, soaking and repeated friction may shorten its visible wear.
After swimming or heavy perspiration, rinse the skin when practical, gently pat it dry and reapply moisturizer. No body oil, lotion or additive can make DHA-developed color waterproof.
Exfoliate at the Right Point in the Tan Cycle
Exfoliation should not be treated as an everyday step while trying to maintain a fresh spray tan.
During the first part of the wear cycle, avoid unnecessary scrubbing. As the tan reaches the end of its cycle, gentle exfoliation can help remove remaining uneven color and accumulated surface cells before the next application.
Use a well-formulated exfoliating product rather than relying primarily on friction. AYU’s emulsifying sugar scrubs gently smooth the skin and rinse clean without leaving a heavy residue.
If using an exfoliating mitt, use very gentle pressure. More force does not create better preparation and may leave the skin irritated.
Complete the final gentle exfoliation approximately 24 hours before the next spray tan appointment. Do not attempt to remove an old tan by aggressively scrubbing immediately before being sprayed again.
Remember That Shaving Also Affects the Surface
Shaving creates friction and removes some surface material along with the hair. Frequent shaving may therefore contribute to faster fading, particularly on the legs.
When maintaining a tan:
-
Use a clean, sharp razor
-
Use enough shaving product to provide comfortable slip
-
Avoid repeatedly passing over the same area
-
Gently rinse and pat the skin dry
-
Apply moisturizer afterward
Before the next spray tan, complete shaving according to the artist’s preparation instructions, generally about 24 hours before the appointment.
Enjoy Self-Care Rituals Without Misrepresenting the Skin
Baths, massage and aromatherapy can be valuable relaxation rituals. They may help someone feel calmer and more cared for.
Long soaking, hot water, massage oils and repeated friction may also accelerate spray-tan fading. That does not mean these rituals must be avoided. It simply means the client can decide what matters most at that point in the tan cycle.
Near the end of a fading tan, a bath or gentle body-care ritual may fit beautifully into preparation for a fresh start.
Protect the Skin From the Sun
A spray tan does not provide meaningful sun protection.
Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on exposed skin. Reapply it according to the product directions, especially after swimming or perspiring.
Sun protection matters more than extending the appearance of a spray tan. If sunscreen, swimming or necessary cleansing causes the color to fade sooner, protect the skin first.
Know When the Skin Needs a Break
Do not apply another spray tan simply because the previous color has faded.
If the skin is visibly cracked, inflamed, sunburned, actively peeling or irritated, allow it time to recover. Applying DHA over a compromised or uneven surface is unlikely to create an attractive result and may make the skin feel more uncomfortable.
Persistent irritation, itching, cracking or other concerning changes should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.
The AYU Approach to Between-Appointment Care
At AYU Sunless, we view professional tanning and whole-body skin care as connected.
A beautiful tan is not maintained by scrubbing the skin into submission or coating it with products that promise to make color waterproof. It is supported through gentle cleansing, consistent moisturization, sensible exfoliation and an understanding of when the skin is ready for another application.
The healthiest approach is not to force every tan to remain indefinitely. Allow the color to complete its natural wear cycle, care for the skin underneath it and begin the next appointment with a comfortable, balanced surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I moisturize after a spray tan?
Apply a suitable moisturizer daily after the first rinse, unless your artist provides different formula-specific instructions. Apply more frequently when areas feel dry or tight.
Can I use body butter after a spray tan?
Yes. A body butter can provide richer emollient support between appointments. Avoid leaving a heavy layer of body butter on the skin immediately before the next spray tan.
Does showering wash off a developed spray tan?
An ordinary shower does not wash away all DHA-developed color at once. The temporary cosmetic bronzer rinses away during the first shower, while the developed tan fades gradually as surface cells naturally shed.
When should I exfoliate before my next spray tan?
Begin gently smoothing away the remaining color near the end of the tan cycle. Complete the final gentle exfoliation approximately 24 hours before the next appointment.
Can I swim or exercise after a spray tan?
Avoid swimming, exercise and heavy perspiration during the initial development period. After the tan has developed and the first rinse is complete, these activities can resume, although water exposure and friction may cause the tan to fade faster.
Does a spray tan protect my skin from the sun?
No. A spray tan does not replace sunscreen. Use broad-spectrum sun protection and follow the sunscreen manufacturer’s reapplication directions.
