Sunless Tanning Terms Explained: A Glossary for Clients and Spray Tan Artists

Sunless tanning has its own language—and sometimes the same word is used differently by brands, artists, and clients.

What does “rapid” actually mean? Is a clear spray tan still working if you cannot see it? Does a higher DHA percentage always create a better or darker tan? And is an airbrush tan the same as an HVLP spray tan?

This glossary explains the most common sunless tanning terms in clear, practical language. Whether you are preparing for your first spray tan or selecting products and equipment for professional services, understanding these terms can help you make better decisions and set more realistic expectations.

Airbrush Tanning

Airbrush tanning is a technician-applied service performed with a smaller airbrush-style spray gun. It generally produces a narrower spray pattern than a full-size professional spray tan gun, giving the artist detailed control over where the solution is placed.

Airbrush equipment may be useful for facial application, contour work, touch-ups, competition tanning, or other areas requiring precision. Because the spray pattern is smaller, a full-body application may take longer than it would with HVLP equipment.

The term is sometimes used casually to describe any technician-applied spray tan, but true airbrush and HVLP systems are not identical.

Automated Spray Tan Booth

An automated booth applies tanning solution through a programmed series of spray nozzles while the client follows specific positioning instructions.

Because there is no artist manually adjusting the application, correct body positioning is especially important. Final results can also be influenced by booth calibration, spray pattern, solution delivery, skin preparation, and the client’s ability to follow the poses.

Classic or Standard Solution

A classic or standard spray tan solution is designed to remain on the skin for a longer period before the initial rinse, often around six to eight hours, although instructions vary by formulation.

“Classic” does not mean outdated, weaker, or lower quality. It describes the recommended wear and rinse schedule. Some clients and artists prefer classic formulas because the longer processing window can feel more predictable within their routines.

Always follow the directions for the specific product rather than assuming every classic solution has the same rinse time.

Clear Spray Tan Solution

A clear solution contains no immediate cosmetic bronzer or guide color. The skin may look nearly unchanged immediately after application, but DHA can still be present and the tan can still develop.

Clear solution is helpful for clients who prefer to avoid temporary bronzer transfer onto clothing or bedding. It also requires careful, methodical application because the artist cannot rely on visible guide color to see exactly where the solution has landed.

Clear does not mean colorless after development. It means the formula does not provide an instant tinted guide during application.

Cosmetic Bronzer or Guide Color

A cosmetic bronzer, often called guide color, is the temporary tint visible immediately after a spray tan or self-tanner is applied.

Its purpose is to help show where the product has been placed and give the client an immediate bronzed appearance. This color sits on the skin’s surface and is largely removed during the initial rinse.

Guide color is not the same as the developed tan created by DHA. A solution’s brown, violet, green, caramel, or plum appearance during wear should not be confused with the final color that remains after rinsing and development.

Developed Color

Developed color is the longer-lasting skin coloration produced as DHA reacts within the outermost portion of the skin.

It becomes more visible over time and remains after the cosmetic guide color has been rinsed away. The final result depends on more than the solution’s appearance in the bottle. DHA concentration, application amount, development time, formulation, skin condition, preparation, and aftercare can all influence the outcome.

Development Time

Development time is the period during which DHA-generated color forms and becomes more visible.

It is important to distinguish development time from rinse time. A rapid solution may be rinsed after two, three, or four hours, but that does not necessarily mean the tan has reached its final color by then. Color can continue developing after the initial rinse.

Clients should avoid judging a rapid tan immediately after rinsing, when the guide color has been removed but the developed color is still emerging.

Desquamation

Desquamation is the skin’s natural process of shedding cells from the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis.

Because sunless tanning color develops primarily within this outer layer, the tan gradually fades as those colored surface cells are shed. This is why no sunless tan is permanent.

Dryness, friction, aggressive exfoliation, shaving habits, bathing practices, and individual skin-renewal patterns can all influence how evenly a tan fades.

DHA

DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, the principal color-producing ingredient used in most sunless tanning formulas.

DHA interacts with amino-containing substances in the stratum corneum, creating brown-colored compounds known as melanoidins. This creates the appearance of a tan without stimulating melanin production and without requiring ultraviolet exposure.

In the United States, DHA is permitted as a color additive in externally applied cosmetics. During spray application, exposure to the eyes, lips, mucous membranes, inhalation, and ingestion should be prevented in accordance with FDA guidance.

DHA-created color is cosmetic. It does not provide meaningful sun protection, so sunscreen is still necessary.

DHA Percentage

DHA percentage describes how much DHA is present in a formula. For example, an 8% solution contains a lower concentration of DHA than a 12% solution.

A higher percentage has the potential to create greater color depth, but the number alone does not determine the quality or final appearance of a tan. Application volume, number of coats, development time, formulation design, skin condition, and aftercare also matter.

More DHA is not automatically better. Applying a very high percentage to dry, compromised, or unevenly prepared skin may emphasize texture or produce an unbalanced result. Professional selection should be based on the client’s skin and desired outcome not simply the darkest number available.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the process of loosening and removing excess surface-cell buildup from the skin.

Before sunless tanning, the goal is to create a more uniform surface, not to aggressively scrub the skin. Over-exfoliation can leave the skin irritated or uneven and may interfere with how comfortably and consistently a product applies.

Clients should follow the preparation instructions provided by their artist or product manufacturer, since recommended timing and methods can vary.

HVLP

HVLP stands for high volume, low pressure. In professional spray tanning, an HVLP system uses a high volume of air at relatively low pressure to atomize tanning solution into a controlled spray pattern.

The wider fan pattern makes HVLP equipment efficient for full-body services. Airflow, solution flow, spray-gun settings, distance, speed, and technique must work together to control how much product reaches the skin.

HVLP is a method of application. It does not describe the DHA percentage, development speed, or quality of the solution inside the cup.

Initial Rinse

The initial rinse is the first shower or rinse taken after the recommended wear period.

This rinse removes the majority of the cosmetic bronzer along with excess surface residue. The water may appear brown as the guide color washes away. This does not mean the developed tan is being washed off.

For the first rinse, clients are commonly advised to use lukewarm water and avoid aggressive scrubbing. Specific instructions may vary, so follow the directions given for the product used.

Maillard Reaction

The Maillard reaction is the nonenzymatic browning process associated with DHA-based sunless tanning.

In simplified terms, DHA reacts with amino-containing substances within the stratum corneum and forms colored compounds called melanoidins. The chemistry is often compared with browning reactions studied in food science, although sunless tanning occurs in the skin’s outer surface layer under cosmetic-use conditions.

This reaction does not create a melanin tan and does not require UV exposure.

Overspray

Overspray is the portion of atomized tanning solution that does not land on the intended area of the client’s skin.

Some overspray is possible with spray application, but equipment settings, ventilation, extraction systems, spray distance, gun control, and artist technique can help manage it.

Professional studios should use appropriate ventilation and follow applicable safety practices. Artists should also prevent clients from inhaling the mist or exposing the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes during application.

Rapid-Rinse Solution

A rapid-rinse solution is formulated to allow the client to complete the initial rinse sooner than with a traditional classic solution.

The rinse schedule may be adjusted according to the intended depth, for example, an earlier rinse for a lighter result and a later rinse for a deeper result, but exact timing is product-specific.

“Rapid” refers primarily to the shortened time before the first rinse. It does not mean the DHA reaction stops at the moment of rinsing, nor does it mean the final tan appears instantly. Color commonly continues developing afterward.

A rapid solution is also more than simply a high-DHA classic solution. Its overall formulation and development system influence how it performs.

Self-Tanner

A self-tanner is a product a person applies at home to create a tanned appearance without UV exposure. Common formats include lotions, mousses, sprays, mists, drops, and gradual tanning moisturizers.

Many self-tanners contain DHA, but some bronzing products provide only temporary cosmetic color. Reading the product directions helps clarify whether the color will develop, wash away, or do both.

Skin Barrier

The skin barrier is the protective system primarily associated with the stratum corneum and its surrounding lipid structure. It helps limit excessive water loss and protects the skin from outside stressors.

When the skin barrier is dry, irritated, or disrupted, a tanning product may apply or develop less uniformly. Areas such as elbows, knees, ankles, hands, and feet often require special attention because their surface texture and product absorption can differ from the rest of the body.

A better tan begins with respecting the condition of the skin, not simply choosing a stronger solution.

Skin Preparation

Skin preparation includes the steps taken before applying a spray tan or self-tanner to create a clean, balanced, and reasonably uniform surface.

Depending on the product and service, preparation may include appropriately timed exfoliation and the removal of makeup, deodorant, oils, heavy moisturizers, or other residues that could interfere with application.

Good preparation does not mean stripping or aggressively scrubbing the skin. The goal is a consistent surface that supports even product placement and development.

Spray Tanning

Spray tanning is the application of a sunless tanning formula as a fine mist. The solution may be applied manually by a trained artist using spray equipment or automatically inside a booth.

Professional spray tanning allows an artist to adjust technique and product placement based on the client’s body, skin condition, and desired result. However, the equipment does not create the tan by itself. Formula selection, application control, preparation, development, and aftercare all contribute to the final outcome.

Tan Extender

A tan extender is a body-care product intended to help maintain the appearance of a sunless tan.

Some tan extenders are moisturizers without tanning ingredients, while others contain a low level of DHA or another color-building ingredient. A DHA-containing extender may gradually replenish some visible color as the original tan fades.

The label matters: a moisturizer can support skin comfort and a more even-looking fade, but it will not necessarily add color unless it contains a tanning ingredient.

UV-Free Tanning

UV-free tanning refers to creating a tanned appearance without deliberate exposure to sunlight or UV tanning equipment.

DHA-based self-tanners and spray tans fall into this category, but so do temporary wash-off bronzers. The important distinction is whether the product creates developed color, provides only temporary cosmetic color, or combines both.

UV-free does not mean SPF. Unless a product is specifically labeled and regulated as a sunscreen, it should not be expected to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation.

Understanding the Language Leads to Better Results

Sunless tanning results are rarely determined by one number, one bronzer color, or one piece of equipment.

The solution provides the chemistry, but the skin provides the reaction environment. When clients understand rinse and development instructions and artists understand the relationship between formulation, application, and skin condition, the process becomes more predictable for everyone.

A little clarity goes a long way toward creating a more even tan, a more natural-looking fade, and better expectations on both sides of the spray gun.
