How to Prepare for a Spray Tan Appointment: Before, During and After
Preparing for a spray tan does not require an aggressive routine or a long list of complicated rules.
For the most even result, gently exfoliate and complete hair removal in advance, arrive with clean and completely dry skin, avoid leaving makeup, deodorant, lotion or other residue on the areas being sprayed, and bring loose clothing to wear afterward.
Just as importantly, follow the rinse time provided for the particular formula used during your appointment. Not every spray tan is an eight-hour tan.
Why Skin Preparation Matters Before a Spray Tan
DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, creates sunless color by reacting with amino-containing compounds within the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.
The stratum corneum is not identical across the body. Some areas are thicker, drier, rougher or more textured. The skin may also carry an invisible layer of body lotion, deodorant, sunscreen, sweat, makeup or cleanser residue.
These differences can affect how evenly the spray tan solution spreads and how much product remains on different areas of the skin.
Preparation does not open the pores or make the skin absorb more DHA. Spray tanning is a surface reaction. The goal is to create a clean clean, calm and reasonably uniform surface for controlled application and development.
The Day Before Your Spray Tan Appointment
Gently Exfoliate the Skin
Exfoliation helps remove loose, flaky surface buildup and remnants of an older tan that could make the new application look uneven.
Use a well-formulated body exfoliant with light pressure. The skin should feel smoother afterward, not red, scratched, tight or irritated.
An exfoliating mitt may be used gently if additional help is needed, but it should not be the primary method of preparation or used to aggressively scrub the skin. More exfoliation does not automatically produce a better or longer-lasting tan.
Avoid using lemon juice, baking soda or improvised acidic remedies. Routine use of strong AHA or BHA exfoliants immediately before a spray tan is also unnecessary and may leave some skin feeling sensitized.
AYU Smooth Glow Sugar Scrub is an emulsifying exfoliant developed specifically for sunless preparation. It loosens dry surface buildup and rinses clean without leaving a heavy, greasy film.
Remove Uneven Remnants of an Older Tan
You do not need to scrub away every trace of an evenly fading tan.
However, visible buildup around the ankles, wrists, elbows, knees, hands or feet should be gently smoothed before another spray tan is applied. Spraying directly over distinctly uneven remnants can deepen those areas instead of disguising them.
The goal is a smoother surface transition, not completely stripped skin.
Complete Hair Removal in Advance
Shaving, waxing, sugaring and depilatory products can create friction or temporary sensitivity.
Complete hair removal the day before your appointment when possible. This gives the skin time to become calm and allows shaving cream, wax residue or other hair-removal products to be rinsed away completely.
If same-day shaving is unavoidable, use a clean razor, rinse thoroughly and allow the skin to cool and settle. Do not spray tan over cuts, razor burn or visibly irritated skin.
Moisturize in the Days Leading Up to the Appointment
Consistent moisturization before the day of your tan is more helpful than trying to correct significant dryness with a heavy layer of lotion immediately before the appointment.
Choose a light, well-formulated, tan-safe moisturizer that keeps the skin feeling comfortable without leaving a heavy or uneven coating.
The important question is not simply whether a moisturizer is labeled oil-free. What matters is how the complete formula behaves on the skin.
The Day of Your Spray Tan
Shower With a Rinse-Clean Body Wash
Shower before your appointment using a gentle body wash that rinses clean. AYU Smooth Glow Hydrating Body Wash was formulated for use before and after sunless tanning and cleanses without leaving the skin feeling heavily coated.
Rinse thoroughly and allow the skin to become completely cool and dry before dressing.
Do not arrive with skin that is still damp, steamy or sweaty. Surface moisture can cause the spray tan solution to bead, move or distribute unevenly.
Remove Products From the Areas Being Sprayed
Before your appointment, the skin should be free from:
-
Body lotion or body butter
-
Body oil
-
Deodorant or antiperspirant
-
Makeup
-
Sunscreen
-
Perfume overspray
-
Sweat
-
Shaving-product residue
-
Older self-tanner that is visibly uneven
These products are not automatically “bad” for the skin. The concern is that an uneven surface film can change how the tanning solution wets and spreads across the skin.
If your skin is particularly dry, your artist may apply a small amount of moisturizer or barrier product selectively to areas such as the hands, feet, elbows, knees and ankles. Do not apply a thick layer over the entire body immediately before the appointment unless your artist has instructed you to do so.
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Bring loose, dark clothing that will not press tightly against freshly sprayed skin.
Loose pants, an oversized shirt or a relaxed dress are generally better than leggings, tight waistbands, fitted bras, socks or closed shoes. Dark, loose sandals are helpful when weather permits.
If rain is expected, bring suitable protection. Even a small splash of water can disturb a developing tan before the initial rinse.
What Happens Before the Spray Tan Begins?
A professional appointment should begin with a brief consultation.
Your artist may ask about:
-
Your desired depth
-
Previous spray tan experiences
-
The visible condition of your skin
-
Known sensitivities or previous reactions
-
Recent exfoliation and hair removal
-
The timing of an upcoming event
-
How long you can comfortably wear the solution before rinsing
The artist should consider your natural coloring and tanning response, skin condition, desired result, previous results and available development time when selecting the formula and rinse schedule.
The temporary bronzer name or color should not be the only basis for choosing a solution. Cosmetic bronzer provides immediate guide color, while the final tan develops through the DHA reaction.
Final Skin Preparation
Even a client who prepared carefully at home may arrive with sweat, deodorant, makeup or other residue.
AYU Smooth Glow Pre-Tan Prep Spray can be used as the final in-studio preparation step. When residue is present, the skin should be misted, wiped thoroughly with a clean towel and allowed to dry completely before tanning.
Prep spray does not replace exfoliation. Exfoliation addresses loose surface buildup and texture, while prep spray addresses residue remaining on the skin at the time of service.
For the deeper science behind this step, read Should You Use a Pre-Tan Prep Spray Before a Spray Tanning Session?.
Protecting Sensitive Areas
The studio should provide appropriate protection and instructions for the service. Depending on the artist’s protocol, this may include protective measures for the eyes, nose and mouth, a hair covering, disposable undergarments, protective footwear and a barrier product for selected areas.
The FDA permits DHA for external application to the skin. This permitted use does not include inhalation, ingestion or exposure to the lips, nose, eyes or surrounding eye area. Proper extraction, ventilation and client protection should therefore be part of a professional spray tan service.
During the Spray Tan Application
Your artist will guide you through a series of positions so the solution can be applied evenly around the arms, legs, torso, hands and feet.
Follow the positioning instructions and avoid touching freshly sprayed skin. Let the artist know if you feel uncomfortable, need to move or believe product has entered an area that should be protected.
If the solution contains a cosmetic bronzer, the artist may use it as a visual guide to check coverage. That visible bronzer is temporary. It does not determine the final DHA-developed color.
Clear or bronzer-free solutions do not provide the same immediate visual guide, but the DHA reaction develops through the same basic surface chemistry.
Immediately After the Spray Tan
The solution should be allowed to dry before you dress. Drying time depends on the formula, amount applied, airflow and studio protocol.
Your artist may apply AYU Smooth Glow Moisture Seal after the tanning solution is dry. This provides lightweight, water-based hydration and supports skin comfort during development.
A professional finishing powder may then be applied lightly to areas prone to moisture, tackiness or friction. Finishing powder can improve comfort and reduce bronzer movement, but it does not make the developing tan sweat-resistant or replace proper aftercare.
Once dressed:
-
Avoid water and rain
-
Avoid exercise and perspiration
-
Avoid tight clothing and friction
- Avoid prolonged skin-to-skin contact
-
Follow the exact rinse time assigned by your artist
A rapid-rinse solution may require an initial rinse after only a few hours. A classic formula is generally worn longer. Rinsing too early can reduce the intended depth, while leaving a rapid formula on longer is not automatically better.
What to Expect During the Initial Rinse
DHA begins reacting after it contacts the skin. The visible result develops progressively according to the formula, amount applied, skin condition and development time.
If your solution contains a cosmetic guide bronzer, much of that temporary color will rinse away during the initial shower. This is normal and does not mean the spray tan has disappeared.
The skin may look lighter immediately after rinsing because the instant bronzer has been removed. The DHA-developed color can continue becoming more visible after the rinse according to the formulation.
For AYU professional solutions, the initial rinse is generally completed with lukewarm water only unless your artist provides different instructions.
During the rinse:
-
Do not scrub the skin
-
Do not use an exfoliating mitt, washcloth or body scrub
-
Rinse away the cosmetic bronzer completely
-
Gently pat the skin dry
-
Do not rub aggressively with a towel
Once the skin is dry, a light, well-formulated, tan-safe moisturizer may be used according to your artist’s instructions, particularly when the skin is dry or mature.
Caring for Your Skin After the Tan Develops
After the initial development period, use a gentle body wash and moisturize consistently. Long hot showers, aggressive exfoliation, repeated swimming, soaking and friction can make the tan fade sooner or less evenly.
Daily moisturizer does not permanently seal DHA color into the skin. It helps dry or rough skin appear smoother and supports a more even-looking fade as the DHA-colored surface cells are naturally released.

Remember that a spray tan does not provide sun protection. Continue using sunscreen and appropriate sun-protective measures whenever your skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
When Should You Schedule a Spray Tan Before an Event?
For an important event, schedule the appointment approximately one to two days beforehand. This allows time for the initial rinse, continued color development and any minor adjustments to makeup, clothing or skincare.
Brides and first-time spray tan clients should consider scheduling a trial appointment well before the event. A trial allows the client and artist to confirm the appropriate formula, desired depth, rinse time and aftercare routine without last-minute uncertainty.
The AYU Perspective
A beautiful spray tan is not created by the darkest solution or the most aggressive preparation routine.
It comes from understanding the skin, selecting an appropriate formulation, applying it evenly and following the correct development and aftercare instructions.
The spray tan solution provides the chemistry. The condition and preparation of the skin help determine how evenly that chemistry is expressed.
Thoughtful preparation supports a tan that develops more predictably, feels comfortable on the skin and fades with greater balance.
Frequently Asked Questions About Spray Tan Preparation
When should I exfoliate and remove unwanted hair before a spray tan?
Complete gentle exfoliation and hair removal the day before your appointment when possible. This allows the skin time to settle and helps ensure that exfoliating, shaving or hair-removal residue has been thoroughly removed.
Should I shower before my spray tan appointment?
Yes. Use a gentle, rinse-clean body wash and make sure the skin is completely cool and dry before the appointment. Do not arrive with skin that is damp, sweaty or coated with cleanser residue.
Should I apply moisturizer, deodorant or makeup before a spray tan?
Moisturize regularly in the days leading up to your appointment. Immediately before tanning, avoid heavy lotion, body oil, deodorant, makeup and sunscreen on the areas being sprayed. Your artist may apply a small amount of moisturizer or barrier product selectively to dry areas.
How long should I wait before rinsing a spray tan?
Follow the exact rinse time provided by your artist for the formula used. Rapid and classic spray tan solutions have different development schedules. Do not assume that every spray tan should remain on for eight hours.
Why does my spray tan look lighter after the first rinse?
If the solution contains a guide bronzer, much of that temporary cosmetic color washes away during the initial rinse. The DHA-developed color remains and may continue becoming more visible after rinsing according to the formulation.
When should I schedule a spray tan before an important event?
Schedule your appointment approximately one to two days before the event. First-time clients, brides and anyone trying a new formula should consider having a trial spray tan well in advance.
