How to Give Clients More Reasons to Book a Spray Tan Throughout the Year
How spray tan artists can create more year-round booking opportunities without making clients feel that they need to stay tan all year.
This article is part of The Business of Professional Sunless, an AYU Sunless series sharing practical observations gathered from more than 20 years of working directly with thousands of professional spray tan artists.
In our previous article, How to Reconnect With Past Spray Tan Clients Without Sounding Salesy, we discussed thoughtful ways to reconnect with clients who already know and trust your service.
Once you reconnect, another question becomes important:
Do your clients have enough reasons to think about professional spray tanning throughout the year?
Many clients first discover spray tanning because of a wedding, vacation, prom, photoshoot, or competition. The challenge for an artist is what happens after that event is over.
Building more consistent year-round spray tan bookings does not mean convincing clients they need to stay tan all year. It means helping them recognize the moments when professional sunless tanning may naturally fit into their beauty routine, self-care and wellness choices, social calendar, travel, work, photos, performances, or other occasions already happening in their lives.
The opportunity is not to invent more reasons to tan. It is to communicate the reasons your clients already have.
Help Clients Think Beyond Weddings and Vacations
Weddings, vacations, proms, and major events will always be important parts of the spray tan business.
But they are not the only times a client may enjoy the service.
Other reasons to book may include:
- Professional headshots
- Family photos
- Date nights
- Birthdays and anniversaries
- Work or networking events
- Reunions
- Weekend getaways
- Concerts and celebrations
- Fitness competitions
- Dance and performance events
- Seasonal wardrobe changes
- Regular beauty appointments
- Taking a little time for themselves
These occasions may feel smaller than a wedding or vacation, but together they can help clients see professional spray tanning as a service that fits into more than one or two moments each year.
Your marketing can help make those connections.
Instead of simply saying:
“Book your spray tan.”
Give the client a reason to picture herself using the service:
“Professional photos coming up? Plan your spray tan early enough to allow time for skin preparation, development, and the result you want.”
The second message provides context, education, and a reason to act.
Include Spray Tanning in the Beauty, Self-Care, and Wellness Conversation
Not every beauty appointment needs to be connected to a major event.
People schedule hair appointments, facials, manicures, massages, and other personal-care services because they enjoy the experience and choose to make time for themselves.
For some clients, professional spray tanning may fit naturally into that same beauty, self-care, and wellness routine.
A client may book because she enjoys:
- Taking time for herself
- Feeling polished
- Refreshing her appearance
- Preparing for a new season
- Coordinating several beauty appointments
- Simply enjoying the sunless tanning experience
There is an important distinction here.
You do not need to tell clients that they need darker skin to feel beautiful, confident, or complete.
Spray tanning is an optional beauty service.
The wellness connection is about the time, ritual, and personal-care experience surrounding the appointment, not a health benefit from the tan itself.
The message can simply be:
“You do not need a vacation on the calendar to enjoy your spray tan. If it is a beauty service you enjoy, it can simply be part of the time you choose to spend on yourself.”
That keeps the conversation centered on personal choice rather than creating insecurity.
Market the Professional Experience, Not Only the Color
Most spray tan marketing naturally focuses on the finished appearance.
But your client is purchasing more than color.
A professional spray tan service may also include:
- A consultation
- Skin preparation guidance
- Help selecting an appropriate service
- Professional application
- Development-time guidance
- Rinse instructions
- Aftercare education
- Product recommendations
- Access to an artist when questions arise
Those details help explain why a client may choose a professional appointment rather than applying a self-tanner at home.
Instead of posting only:
“Get your glow.”
Try explaining the service:
“Have an event coming up? We can help you plan your preparation, appointment timing, development time, and desired depth so you know what to expect before you ever step into the spray room.”
That communicates professional value.
It also gives you more meaningful things to talk about than simply showing another finished tan.
Create Seasonal Reasons to Talk About Spray Tanning
You do not need to invent a new promotion every month.
The seasons already give you natural opportunities to communicate with clients.
Spring
Talk about weddings, proms, graduations, bridal trials, spring travel, professional photos, and preparing skin after winter.
Summer
Talk about vacations, weddings, events, maintaining color, swimming, outdoor activities, and gently refreshing an evenly fading tan.
Fall
Talk about family photos, weddings, homecoming, fall travel, football weekends, dance and competition seasons, and changing wardrobes.
Winter
Talk about holiday parties, family photos, New Year celebrations, winter vacations, dry-skin preparation, and choosing a beauty service simply because the client enjoys it.
This gives your social media, email, and client communication a natural rhythm throughout the year.
You are not repeatedly telling people to book.
You are staying relevant to what may already be happening in their lives.
Help Clients Plan Before They Need the Appointment
Sometimes clients do not book because they remember the service too late.
They think about a spray tan the day before a wedding, photoshoot, or vacation and discover that your calendar is full.
Client education can solve part of that problem.
For example:
“Have photos coming up this month? Think about your spray tan several days ahead so you have time for appropriate skin preparation and development.”
For bridal clients:
“Your wedding should not be the first time you experience your chosen spray tan. Consider scheduling a trial before another event so you can determine the application and depth you prefer.”
These messages provide useful education while also encouraging clients to schedule earlier.
That helps the client and helps the artist manage the calendar.
Make Customization Part of Your Marketing
A client may not want the same spray tan every time she visits.
Her desired result may change depending on the occasion, her skin, her schedule, or simply her preference.
One appointment may call for a subtle result.
Another may be before a vacation or competition when she wants more depth.
She may have plenty of time for a classic development period during one visit and need a rapid-rinse option another time.
Some clients may prefer a clear solution when they do not want cosmetic bronzer transfer.
Professional customization gives clients another reason to return.
Talk about it.
You might say:
“Your spray tan does not have to look the same for every occasion. Tell your artist where you are going, what you are wearing, how much development time you have, and the depth you prefer.”
That helps clients understand that professional sunless tanning is not necessarily one formula, one depth, or one identical appointment every time.
Use Education to Stay Connected Between Appointments
You do not have to ask for a booking every time you communicate with clients.
Education gives you a useful reason to stay connected between appointments.
Depending on your clientele and the season, you might create content around questions such as:
- How to prepare skin before a spray tan
- Why gentle exfoliation matters
- What happens during the initial rinse
- The difference between cosmetic bronzer and developed DHA color
- Why dry areas may develop differently
- How to care for skin between appointments
- How to refresh an evenly fading tan
- When to schedule before an important event
You do not need to cover all of these at once.
One useful question can become an email, social post, short video, or client education piece that keeps your studio visible without constantly asking for an appointment.
Helpful education keeps your name familiar while reinforcing your expertise.
Then, when the client does have a reason to book, she already knows who to contact.
Do Not Create Pressure to Book Constantly
More reasons to book does not mean more messages asking clients to book.
There is a difference.
If every post, email, or text says “appointments available,” clients may eventually stop noticing.
Instead, vary what you communicate.
One month may include:
- A seasonal reason to book
- A preparation tip
- An answer to a common client question
- A reminder about an upcoming busy period
Consistency is more important than constant promotion.
You want clients to remember your business when the service becomes relevant, not feel as though you are always trying to fill an empty appointment.
Final Thoughts
Many clients will first find professional spray tanning because they have a specific event on the calendar.
That first appointment can introduce them to much more than the finished color.
It can introduce them to professional guidance, customization, preparation education, thoughtful application, and an experience they may simply enjoy.
Your job is not to persuade clients that they need to remain tan all year.
Your opportunity is to help them recognize when the service naturally fits into something already happening in their lives.
Talk about the occasions.
Talk about beauty, self-care, wellness, and personal choice.
Teach clients how to plan ahead.
Show them what professional customization means.
And give them useful information even when you are not asking them to book.
You do not need to manufacture demand. Sometimes you simply need to help clients recognize the reasons they already have to return.
